چکیده
The present study describes the reproductive biology, population structure and life history traits of the abundant intertidal crab Xantho poressa. Between March 2007 and April 2008, a total of 1918 individuals were collected in Corrales de Rota (SW Spain), a human-modified intertidal habitat characterized by an artificial high complexity. Suitable refuges for crabs (cobbles and boulders) are very abundant in this area and density (maximum of 50 ind*m -2 ) was directly related with the area covered by these stones. In spring and summer, size frequency distributions showed a polymodal pattern with seasonal variations related to the incorporation of juveniles to the adult population. Newly settled juveniles were not found in the corrales suggesting an

Distribution, Population and Reproductive Biology of the Fiddler Crab Uca sindensis (Crustacea: Ocypodidae) in a Subtropical Mangrove of Pohl Area
Distribution, population and reproductive biology of Uca sindensis were studied in a subtropical mangrove of Pohl port in the northern Persian Gulf. Sex ratio, distribution, population structure, handedness (evenness), diameter burrow, breeding season and fecundity were investigated. Ten 0.5 m2 quadrates were randomly sampled during low tide periods from October 2009 to September 2010.A total o...
متن کاملMangrove vegetation and community structure of brachyuran crabs as ecological indicators of Pondicherry coast, South east coast of India
Baseline ecological studies of Pondicherry mangroves are important for monitoring, management and conservation of mangrove ecosystems. A brachyuran crab faunal assemblage at four stations of Pondicherry mangroves is described and monthly samplings were made during September 2008 – August 2009. Totally 22 species of brachyuran crabs belonging to 12 genera and 5 families were recorded crabs bel...
متن کاملLow richness of hermit crabs community (Crustacea: Decapoda: Paguroidea) and high dominance of Clibanarius signatus in the intertidal zones of Larak Island, Persian Gulf, Iran
Abstract Hermit crabs community in the intertidal zones of Larak Island were investigated through a seasonal sampling at five stations using random quadrate sampling method. Overall, seven species were identified and Clibanarius signatus was the dominant species, which showed high dominance over other species. Using Bray-Curtis cluster analysis for comparing seasonal abundance showed that exce...
متن کاملDiversity and distribution of True Crabs (Brachyura) from intertidal rocky shores of Qeshm Island, Persian Gulf
Rocky shores are one of the most important habitats of marine environment in coastal areas. This study was done in 2010-2011 to investigate the diversity of true crabs in intertidal rocky shores of Qeshm island. Samples were collected from intertidal zones during the low-tide at 5 stations. The specimens were fixed in 70% Etanol and transferred to laboratory for identification. Altogether, 15 c...
متن کاملComparing quality of estuarine and nearshore intertidal habitats for Carcinus maenas
Estuarine and nearshore marine areas are vital habitats for several fish and benthic invertebrates. The shore crab Carcinus maenas (Crustacea: Brachyura: Portunidae) inhabits a variety of coastal, estuarine and lagoon habitats. At low tide, habitat structural complexity may be most important for crabs in the intertidal, providing refuge from predation and desiccation. The quality of different v...
